WATCHMEN TRAILER IS UP!!!

The trailer for the eagerly-anticipated WATCHMEN film is up, and I'd say it looks pretty damned good. If you've read the classic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel many of the scenes shown will look familiar, and we finally get a look at how they're handling Dr. Manhattan (see below),

including a shot of him during his days in Viet Nam, in which he disintegrates a Viet Cong soldier with a gesture of his hand.

I'm counting down the days until March 6th, 2009, but until then you can click here to see the trailer. The only question I have about the trailer is this: is it really a good idea to use a tune from BATMAN AND ROBIN, inarguably one of the worst superhero movies ever made, as the music for your coming attraction reel? A version of the Smashing Pumpkins' "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" is heard, and once I recognized it my mind was filled with flashbacks to the George Clooney-as-Batman, nipple-suited train wreck. Hopefully that song was just a placeholder until they get something more appropriate, like Elvis Costello's "Waiting For the End of the World."

MAJOR mixed feelings on this...

On one hand, the trailer nails the look & feel Watchmen should have. Zack Snyder did a bang-up job with 300 (aside from the stupid-queen subplot, the flaws of that movie were flaws of the graphic novel as well), which for better and worse was incredibly faithful to Miller's work. He claims to have been likewise faithful to Watchmen.

On the other hand... it's fucking WATCHMEN, one of the most impressively complex graphic novels ever. Twelve issues jam-packed with multi-layered nostalgia, satire, action metaphysics and hardboiled crime/ sci-fi. Fitting all of that into anything less than an HBO miniseries is... well, I have major doubts.

V for Vendetta ruled. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen sucked. From Hell was kinda in the middle. So, yeah. I'm wary but optimistic but wary...

Yeah, but the alternate version of that song -- the one used in the trailer -- is just kick-ass. Always has been.
